Oakland mayor and former Governor Jerry 'Moonbeam' Brown has entered the blogosphere (http://jerrybrown.typepad.com/jerry/). I absolutely despised him as governor, but he seems to be doing a pretty damn good job in Oakland. As the years have gone by, I find him to be a very interesting character. He's moved towards the center and is one of the most fascinating political pundits you'll see. I'm also quite certain that he will be doing his own postings, as he loves to write and his ego absolutely wouldn't stand for any ghost writing.

An extremely interesting, bright and articulate guy. When he steps out of his role as spokesman for the far left, (although he has over the years drifted more toward moderate) or spokesman for the Democrats and speaks as a political analyst his insights are to me the sharpest of anyone I've ever heard. The guy as an analyst can dissect a race or political situation like few I've ever heard and be interesting doing it. Plus as an analyst he seems very balanced and non-partisan.

Jerry is one of the reasons some of us have hope for youngins such as Techie. By and large, most lefties will migrate right as they age. But what also should be remembered is that Brown came out of the 50s and 60s democratic scene, his father was a democratic governor of the state and as we all know, old style democrats are nothing like the new Deaniacs, Pelosies, Kuciniches and so forth.

I think JB's getting the knack (http://jerrybrown.typepad.com/jerry/2005/02/free_sigarchi.html) of this blogging thing down.

Arash Sigarchi, a 28-year-old journalist in Iran, has been sentenced to fourteen years in prison for criticizing the regime in his blog. Yesterday, the Committee to Protect Bloggers declared a day of action to support imprisoned bloggers everywhere.

I join in. We really need a powerful effort to make sure everyone knows and no one forgets Arash Sigarchi.

Regardless of political difference, we know that officials love to silence critics—even kill or imprison them. Journalists, bloggers, whoever raises the questions, must be defended. Everywhere.

I was pretty sure when he started this, he was not going to simply use it as a soapbox for his political ends in Oakland.
