my husband is trying to watch a disc that his son got him for xmas. We put it in the tv (we have the dvd/vcr/tv combo) and it keeps saying 'wrong disc type'. What the heck does that mean? They are both mgm dvd's. Why can't we watch 'em?

Maybe the region is wrong. Did he buy it from a US retailer?

I *think* so. I'm looking at them now and one says.. us not rated, can.G region 1
the other one says something about canada too. Do they have a different thing up there?

Edit: they both say region 1. Isn't that us? Damn thing is made in California for god's sakes... what the heck! :)

well then I can't understand why it won't play. It's not like my TV unit is outdated or anything.

Have you tried in the DVD player in your computer?

Probably means the DVD player in the TV is aligned just slightly different. It just means the DVD is not totally bad. Did it have any smudges that you can clean?

no smudges. we just opened it. Hey..I've never done this before...this is cool! rofl rofl

Edit: can I somehow adjust the TV/DVD so that it will work on there? That sucks..how do ya know which ones to buy if they can be like that??

Our DVD player is hinky and sometimes refuses to recognize a disk (usually a much abused kids' DVD). I just keep cleaning thie disk and opening and closing the &$^%($ door until it recognizes the disk. Don't know if the percussive maintenance helps the machine, but it sure does me a world of good. :)

Maybe you need to clean the needle. Could be the tone arm is out of balance. Or a tube burned out.

I've had some DVD's that just won't play correctly no matter what I did. Occasionally I could resurrect one of these by making a "back-up" with my computer's DVD burner.

I don't know if it's the media or the manufacturing process that makes some unplayable.

but seriously, Cyd, this just happens sometimes... One trick is to put in something else,, let it load and then switch. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Mostly they work though. Oh and just cause it's new? doesn't mean it isn't smudged or scratched ;)

Could be the tone arm is out of balance.Just put a dime on it, that'll fix it. ;)

Oh shit. It's the unit. I just tried things that I know we have watched on there before and it's kicking it out as the wrong type of disc. They must have done something to it when we moved. Damn.
Not a cheap piece of equipment. Shit.

Probably just needs to be cleaned. Don't give up yet. If you can get into it, clean the optics on it. If not you may want to try one of those cleaning kits thingies.

Oh shit. It's the unit. :(

b4 you toss th e unit get yourself a cd/dvd cleaner...the type that has the cd with the little brush on it...during the move you may have stirred up some dust onto the laser...I think they are under 10$

or worse gave if you gave it a good enough jolt to change the alignment, then it reads no discs and you basically screwed.

...but try the cleaner first...it does work.. :)
