As mentioned in other threads about personal crime from many of the folks here, a <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/16/fraud_trends/">new study points</a> out the completely unsurprising news that criminals seem to be moving down the fraud progression line from riskier less lucrative crimes, to ones that have a higher payout at a lower risk.
A shocker to all of you, I'm sure. However, in the specifics, they note that gangs that used to be into drug dealing, now find that online credit card scams are much more lucrative with a lower chance of getting caught.
At the same time, however, credit card fraud detection methods have been improving, and the criminals who had been working that scam are moving on to easier targets in debit and ATM cards.
