This is a somewhat long read, but interesting. USA Today follows 3 people through their experiences of being unemployed today.

Now then, my opinion is that I feel no sorrow or pity for the first 2 people. Can you guess why?

As for the third, I can sympathize. It seems she's been through a lot and is really having a tough time

The first guy should have had some savings. The amounts of money he made and his age indicate he should have had substantial savings. Something in the seven figures. This guy has lifestyle issues. He spent all he made (a LOT) and then borrowed more. This proves you can make lots of money and still be a loser.

The second person has a little bit of savings, but should be living a little more frugally. Shopping for new clothes, going to movies, travelling; not good ideas when your cash flow is negative.

The mom, number three, has real problems. She feels the repercussions of the easy-come, easy-go attitude of marriage in the modern society. She's got a temporary job, amazingly at $16,000 more than her previous job, but should be concentrating on making it permanent or finding a permanent job. Additional expenses like moving into a bigger place shouldn't be considered. She should be attacking debt, if any, and saving. And trying to get child-support out of her ex-husband.
