Microsoft press release gives a lot of good information. After changing their earlier position that IE 7 would only be released with Longhorn, Microsoft intends to release an IE7 beta this summer. Right now, it is only for Windows XP SP2 customers.

The Microsoft Antispyware program will stay free for personal users, but for sysadmins who need a managed solution, Microsoft will charge for that package.

Also, a unified Microsoft OS & application update service focused on consumers and small businesses, called Microsoft Update, will be released this March. The enterprise Microsoft update product, Windows Update Services (WUS) - the follow up to SUS, will be released sometime in the first half of this year.

So they are coming out early with IE7??? Can anyone say tabbed viewing? I think they want to nip this FF phenomenon thing as soon as possible.

Won't work. Mozilla has most of the momentum and name recognition (even moreso as far as Firefox is concerned) so Microsoft will appear to be "catching up", not really "innovating". Furthermore, Microsoft's Antispyware is total crap, and I don't know of anyone that uses it.

My, that's a pretty bold statement.

Guess you don't read this sub-form very often then..... many of us here on this site already use it.

Hmm.. let me see.... the first scan I ran with it, I found 3 things that adaware, spybot and spysweeper completely missed..

On the 10 test machines I picked out @ work due to the "type" of user and their browsing habits, it continually catches crap that the other big 3 do not.

Yeah, "total crap" indeed.

If no one you know uses it, how can you surmise that it is "total crap"?

Even if IE7 introduces tabbed browsing I doubt if they will really be able to compete with all the excellent tabbed IE shells out there (SlimBrowser, Maxthon, etc.).

But one thing Microsoft has always been fairly good at is sticking with their products and taking the time to make them useful. The first versions of IE sucked. Same for Windows. They are, however, nothing if not persistent.

Microsoft won the browser war and then made the mistake of assuming it was over. It appears as if they realize that (at least, for now).

What is "tabbed browsing"?

John, alternative browsers to IE allow you to have multiple pages open in the same window. Firefox and opera both supply you with clickable tabs near the top of the browser that allow you to seamlessly click through multiple browser windows. Download Firefox from mozilla.org (http://mozilla.org) and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The ease with which I can extend Firefox would keep me in the mozilla camp, too.

Because it's made by Microsoft, and provided for free. The only stuff MS makes that works halfway decently, you have to pay for.

You wanna know why I don't use it? Because I use Mozilla. The easiest means of avoiding getting your rig screwed by spyware is to cease using Internet Explorer. A very simple and painless solution and I can't understand why people insist on continuing to use IE.

Stating you don't use it because it's MS is fine. However, the AntiSpyware package is very good. Very low overhead, even during a deep scan. Probably one of the best products MS has let out to date.

Again. How would you know if you admit you don't use it?

So therefore you are 100% spyware free, 100% of the time?

Something must be wrong with either my version of Firefox or my 4 crapware cleaners, since I still do find things now and then. (albeit minor annoyances)

But hey, you're 100% safe so it must be all M$'s fault.

IMHO, The easiest means of avoiding screwing up your computer is to not live in a world where you think you are totally invincible online because you hate something you refuse to even use in the first place...

Uh - not. The minute IE has tabbed browsing, FFs share will plummet overnight. I will switch back instantly. The current IE alts with tabbed browsing suck, so - I stick with FF for the time being.

Im sorry - FF has more name recognition as a browser than IE?
