But, according to a growing band of top scientists, this box has quite extraordinary powers. It is, they claim, the 'eye' of a machine that appears capable of peering into the future and predicting major world events.

The machine apparently sensed the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre four hours before they happened - but in the fevered mood of conspiracy theories of the time, the claims were swiftly knocked back by sceptics. But last December, it also appeared to forewarn of the Asian tsunami just before the deep sea earthquake that precipitated the epic tragedy.

Now, even the doubters are acknowledging that here is a small box with apparently inexplicable powers.

I am hardly surprised by this and was wondering what took so long for the statistical machine that was so good that it would be used for predictions.

I thought your link was going to be to an image of a Magic Eight Ball. :)

Very interesting.

To me, that is exactly what the link was. ;)

No proof, no explanation ... no vadid attempt at a structured theory, even!
Just speculation, and a desire to "continue the study".

It looks like a simple attempt for more funding to explain a random abnormality of the usual random abnormality of a theoritical random number generator?

Bah, so far, just scientific sounding horseshit.
In my opinion.

"We may be connected together far more intimately than we realise." I hope he's speaking for hisself, I already know that. So my first reaction was like Joe's. Then I read it. The psychic reaction thing is not news to me. *Insert lengthy philopsophical discussion about ethereal connections here.* To me the only "wow" thing is that possibly something was created that can measure it. WOW! If there is any truth there... THAT is something!

It sounds like minority report minus the detailed information.

How the hell did the skeptics have time to chime in on it before the event unfolded?

If you read the article, you'll see that the box supposedly detected...ummm....errrr...well, a disturbance in the force. ;) Not exactly the same thing as predicting the event.

I have a book around somehwere that discusses some paranormal research in the FSU. One of the experiments conducted involved rabbits. They would separate a mother rabbit from one of its offspring and take the baby miles away and drown it. At the moment of drowning, there was a marked change in both the galvanic skin resistance and the brain wave patterns of the mother rabbit.
