View Full Version : Recommendation for mp3 download site

As I said in another thread, I got my wife a new iRiver. She was on iTunes this morning downloading like mad until she realized that all the songs download in mp4 format, which is not supported by WMP10. Since WMP10 is the required program for transferring files to the iRiver, she doesn't want the extra step of having to convert the mp4 to an mp3.
So, does anyone have a recommendation for an online mp3 store? Ideally, they allow you to do anything you want with the song after you download it, meaning there are no limitations.
(and yes, I offered to show her how to use some "other" means of getting the music, but she only wants legit sources)
Thanks!

We're looking at using www.emusic.com. With the purchase of the iRiver, we get 100 free downloads. After that, if we keep the service, it's $9.99 a month for 40 songs per month. Not a bad deal. I downloads the songs in mp3 format, and has no restrictions on use.
Any one got first hand experience with this site?

2 cents a mb. It's in Russia. It's been discussed in depth at DSLR for the past year. Consensus is it's safe. Check it out.

What about MusicMatch Jukebox? You can download songs for 99 cents each and the program will transfer to devices or burn to CD.

I'm not sure if MusicMatch will work with the iRiver, as the manual specifically says that you must use WMP to sync with the iRiver. But hey....one can always try! :)

Download with MMJB and sync to device with WMP? I am pretty sure the downloads from MMJB are MP3 ... still perusing the help files.

MusicMatch Music Store (http://www.musicmatch.com/download/music_intro.htm?OS=pc)
Even better ...
Once you've downloaded your music, you're in the driver's seat. It's yours to enjoy any way you want. Automatically add tracks to your existing Music Library, organize them in your playlists, burn them to CDs or download them to portable players. And, all tracks come with high-resolution album art and are encoded in 160kbps WMA. With crystal-clear CD-quality sound, your music will be good to go, wherever you go.
The iRiver is not on the list of compatible players. She would have to use WMP to sync until they get that added to the list.

Negative Ghost Rider....it worked! And it's actually easier (if that was even possible) to add songs to the iRiver then it was with WMP.
Thank you very much for the suggestion Lissa, otherwise I probably wouldn't have tried it.

Coolio! I did good
I adore MMJB ... it has done nothing but improve in the 2 years I have been using it. My only complaint is the interface is terribly bloated and sluggish. I love the new OnDemand service ... it just rocks!

I like MMJB, too, and I agree wholeheartedly with the bloat assessment of the latest version.
I have an iRiver 799 1GB flash memory player (love it, too). When I hook it up to my PC MMJB automatically loads and pops up a "Portable Device Manager" window from which I can download songs to the iRiver.
Songs that you purchase from MM are protected WMA files (Digital Rights Management), but, with the exception of a couple of songs, MMJB lets me download them directly to the iRiver.

I'm also a fan of MMJB and have been using it for a few years. One of the few things I don't mind paying for.;)
They dont have however, a licencing agreement for down here so there's no 99c deals going or Artist on Demand. Funny though, with the online music purchases I make here, tracks are downloaded to WMP exclusively according to the download site BigPond Music (http://bigpondmusic.com/home.asp). All tracks become available though in MMJB automatically as soon as they're in WMP which suits me fine. Tracks here are $1.89AU which equates to $1.45US. iTunes is yet to show up here although they've been threatening to for ages. Free Napster is another that is not active here.
