This is just fantastic news (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,8122-1425821,00.html) if it pans out.
Pre-eclampsia (http://www.preeclampsia.org/about.asp) is a very serious condition that is estimated to affect over 200,000 women a year in the US.
Taking a simple urine test at the beginning of pregnancy, could give doctors and mothers-to-be a better idea if they are likely to develop the condition. If the test is positive, doctors can then know to more closely watch their patient and the moms would know to keep a better eye out for the warning signs.
My wife suffered from very mild pre-eclampsia with our daughter. Luckily for all of us, the only thing it did to her was make her deliver 2 weeks early and caused my wife to swell up like a balloon at the end of the pregnancy. However, others are not so lucky as the condition can be fatal to both mother and baby.
