What I found the most surprising was that Journalist came in third to last place. Meaning, Wisconsin residents think that only two professions (corporate executive and used car salesmen) are less honest than journalists.

It's sad that those in the military and firefighters rank higher than teachers. I can remember a day when teachers would have ranked at the top.

I think teachers have slipped because of their actions during contract re-negotiations. Screwing up little Johnny's college acceptance chances by refusing to sent letters of recommendation just because it is contract time, doesn't seem to sit well with parents.

Yeah, and academia is taking a beating for reports of bias.
I'm not really surprised, but do find it interesting that trust in the medical profession seems to have slipped. I personally have had some really excellent medical treatment of late, but in my life have also had some very bad treatment.

Yeah, and academia is taking a beating for reports of bias.
But (at least in Wisconsin) not quite as bad a beating as that taken by the police! Ouch! ;)

Actually, teachers and police are only 3 points apart so they are technically within the margin of error. :P

True, true--but it was probably a teacher you taught you to understand statistics!:)
(and didn't teach me! :()

Well, I accept that a lot of people don't trust the police by virtue of pure anecdote. Everyone has some sob story about a cop and rarely are they entirely accurate, namely omitting the actions of the story teller. So I do not find those numbers alarming, although I know a certain degree of the numbers are going to be from the rare rogue cop, much the same as the rare rogue teacher who gives academia a bad name.
A majority of those percentage will be minority, who house a deep - almost cultural - distrust of police. On the occasion I have to surprise an otherwise law-abiding minority with a statement like "You seem like a decent person, and I don't think the government needs more of your money. Is a warning going to be enough?" and watching the subsequent sigh of relief, there is a satisfaction that some of that distrust may have been broken. Naturally, this approach is relative to the level of the offense, but consistency is the key to my ethical approach.
But the same anecdotal reason for distrusting a cop cannot be applied to the teacher, I don't think. So I'm actually surprised teachers aren't rated higher than they are. I personally trust teachers, especially those of my school district.

I wonder where Electrical Engineers fit in? I hope somewhere between Firefighters (some of whom have been known to set arson fires)... and U.S. Military personnel (some of whom have abused Iraqi prisoners). Just another useless poll.

IT professionals did not even rank above car salesmen.

Judging from my experience over the past three days, I would rate IT professionals below people who people who clean body parts off of the road following a car accident. But since neither was rated, both may rate above car salesmen.

Speaking from experience, my own poll would put police above firefighters, followed by teachers, then maybe firefighters.
Police have such a hard task laid out in front of them....I feel for each and every one of you all. Regardless of the fighting in NY between FDNY and NYPD, we CANNOT do our job without you all. So THANK YOU!
Same goes for teachers. The task of teaching our young seems to get harder every year with the PC crowd pushing harder and harder.
THANK YOU for your dedication to teaching our young ones right (even if I don't agree with what you teach all the time :))
Stay safe all....
I can't believe politicians rated that high. I would put car salesman above politician.

Heh ... I went from being a paramedic, which would probably rate somewhere near the firefighters, to being an insurance agent, which would rank pretty close to, if not below, the used car salespeople.
We have a snarky little saying around the office here:
My mom would be heartbroken if she knew I was an insurance agent. She thinks I'm in prison.
