View Full Version : Do Not Open in a New Window

One of the reasons I enjoy tabbed browsing is - the tabbed browsing :)
No more 6 or 7 windows open at the same time.
What's annoying is clicking on a link here and many other places and the owner of the site insisting I have it open in a new window without warning. Is there way to stop new windows opening and have them open in a new tab instead? Yes I know I can right click open in new tab, but sometimes I forget. It would be much easier to get rid of this annoying open in new window thing.
And that f'ing horse icon is also annoying.
Thanks.

Set your tab browser preferences to have "new window" open in a tab ... that's the way mine works with all the links here ... except, for some reason, Techie's links ... those always open in the same window.

What Lissa said, or you can install the "single window" extension to force the issue.

Or you can break down and use Opera, with tabbed browsing as it was meant to be. ;)

I alternate between opera and firefox, but I lean more toward ff.
Ok, I've installed the single window thingy, now how do I get it to work?
One more thing - in opera I can save a bunch of tabs, so everytime I start opera the save 5 or six tabs will open. Is there a way to do that in ff?

Mine works as lissa said. set it in prefs... so that when you click a link you get a new tab instead of new window...
there are some links that won't work, like she mentioned... but not many.

I use this extension for FF (1.0)
http://www.pryan.org/mozilla/site/TheOneKEA/tabprefs/
And have my setting so EVERY link opens in new tab.
You have to set it in the extension options.

Is there a way to do that in ff?I use the "Tabbrowser Extensions" extension -- which is chockfull of goodies, and that is among them. I save the session to a bookmark category, and then you are given the option of "open all" -- it even (sometimes it takes a few tries) remembers the font size and other specs specific to each tab. And there a oodles of other options available with it. I very highly recommend it.
One caveat, it apparentlly doesn't play well with other tab-related extensions (or maybe it's the fault of the others, it's in their write-up blurbs that the warning is issued), so if you'd like to try this, uninstall those extensions first. Have fun! :)

just found this http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=111 the ultimate tab controller, it's really good. Saves all tabs when closed, double click to close tab, open everything in new tab.... it's awesome.
Oops, my excitement I failed to read the above post. Sorry, same thing.

Session Saver (http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-info/sessionsaver)I have a problem with that, in that if the browser crashes, and then on restart you are asked "do you want to restore" and instead of restoring the handful of tabs you died on, it tries to load every single tab in its history -- all those you closed (this could be dozens and dozens), and will stop responding in trying. And then every time you start up, it will do this and die -- the only way I've been able to defeat this deadly loop is to very VERY quickly right-click the tab and "close all others" -- if it lets you -- and then close it normally. A HUGE pain (especially on dialup, where trying to load 60 tabs at the same time is definitely a PROBLEM.)
If you like the "Session Saver" DO NOT EVER say "yes" to the "restore tabs -- session ended abnormally" dialogue. EVER.
This has been your friendly warning system. :)

The way to do it without any extensions:
Tools, Options: For homepage, click "Use Current Pages". Those pages will open up the next time you start up Firefox.
