I think printed encyclopedias are niche products now and electronic ones not far behind. Although I freely acknowledge the fact that all the stuff available on-line has to come from somewhere :)

The caveat with those linked is that you have to have some form of connection. And while wireless, WiFi, and all that goodness is making progress, you still can't replace a good DVD packed with information.

That's true but personally speaking I cannot envision a situation in which I needed access to the contents of an encyclopedia and also did not have Internet access.

I agree with you there Steve. And now Microsoft's Encarta you can purchase a subscription to the online site and not have to worry about using the CD-ROM and program. Plus I can access the website with Linux or any OS that has a browser. For the CD-ROM I need Windows. That's probably why they are selling them almost for free now.
