I've held off upgrading my XP home to the SP2 because of the horror stories I've read...

Should I go ahead and download or hold off a while longer??

You can order the CD for free. Took about a week for it to get here. I was going to upgrade, but the damned software got snarky and said I didn't have enough disk space. Sooooooooooooo, no upgrade until I finally spring for a new hard drive.

I installed from a CD onto XP Home and it went as smooth as silk. But yes, there have been a few horror stories floating around. I have the CD from MS that Biker referred to and most of the PC mags here have a copy sold with the mag. My MS CD took about a week also despite being told when I ordered it would take 4-6. I would guess the great majority of installs have gone well. The word would be out by now if it was a shocker.

I'm not really having any problems, BDD. I would go ahead and pull the trigger on it.

I downloaded and installed without any problems.
In fact, the defrag and IE became faster.

Every once in a while I will re-install either from the download center or from the original update that I have stashed on a cd.

This is just to ensure that I have the original dll's and not have had them corrupted.

Remember, you have the option to remove it in your Add/Remove Control applet.

I haven't had any problems other than the one I posted about yesterday. I would say go for it.

To minimize the chance that something could go wrong start by cleaning up any spyware, turn off running applications, etc.

Horror?

I've done 10+ systems (home & Pro) with SP2, and have yet to see any problems.
The firewall "popups" are a big help with some of my technicaly challenged customers.

The only thing I see I personally don't like is it changes the startup splash screen. (big deal, I know)

I'm afraid to upgrade my computer only because my pc is the one hubby uses for his telecommute, and this computer has already been approved by his company to be the only one he can work from, so if I screw it up with sp2, he's going to keeeel me and I'll have to reinstall everything just the way it was before, and he's got some serious programming software on here that I don't think he's got the discs for (I'm not sure if they let him keep a copy for reformatting purposes).

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being "if you don't upgrade, your computer is going to get hijacked and used for terrorists activities", how important is it to upgrade? Because I've read a lot of stuff about people upgrading and suddenly their pc's becoming useless to them because of all the bugs in sp2. I can't have that happen on my system. I'm running XP Pro.

I decided to jump into it and chance it. I got the cd this friday but already had done the upgrade from windows update site. It's ok BDD...I've had no problems with the official release. I did have a problem with the network standalone and that was only because I uninstalled it. So far all my drivers and software work but I do have a pretty new comp.

You asked one time if sp2 can be installed on special copies of xp...the answer is yes. I read it somewhere.

I've done four machines here (two via Windows Update, two via the CD which came a few weeks ago), and not a glitch amongst any of them... (although I will say, I prefer the Google pop-up blocker to the IE pop-up blocker).

Leo LaPorte was saying earlier today that it mostly seems to be machines owned by less than savvy users that are experiencing difficulty. People with other problems on their machines that they are either unaware of or have stumbled upon some workaround for. His advice, was basically if the box ain't healthy don't upgrade it.

I'm glad to hear so many easy success stories. I too have been holding off because I just haven't had time to deal the problems I assumed I would have.

I'll probably give it a whirl on my home machine in the next week or so. The work laptop though will have to wait until corporate IT gives me the go ahead. They are still in a holding pattern making sure there are no compatibility problems.

I ran into a minor problem at work after the XP upgrade. It had to do with some ERP software we run. Otherwise, I have upgraded over 40 machines and no problems with regular windows stuff.

The issues resulting from installation of SP2 can be serious according to this article in Tech Republic. This might help (http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6264-5322633-1.html?tag=nl.e101) those who have had some problems.

Damn this takes a while. The actual download went quickly (thanks 3000/768 connection), but the actual install is almost painful.

After reading over the changes that SP2 makes, I'm not sure I see the need to upgrade if a system has good security set-up in the first place. Maybe I'm missing some essential patch it's providing that's not listed <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/topten.mspx">here</a>?

With the other security measures we have in place, I'm not sure I need it either. However, I was getting sick & tired of the f&*king globe icon in the system tray saying I have updates available. :vmad:

Well....finally done. Whew!

So far, I haven't noticed any problems. First thing I did was disable the Windows Firewall and all my critical programs seem to function as normal.

I installed SP 2 on two of my machines and uninstalled it on both. I use BitDefender on all my computers and it updates 1-3 times a day and constantly having to tell the "advisor" to stop freaking out telling me that my anti-virus was freaking out and then my firewall was freaking out and it was freaking me out so bad that out it went. I didn't see anything in the update that a well secured machine would need.

Needless to say things are much calmer now :nut:
