So this article in Tech Republic (http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270_11-5034890.html?tag=nl.e101) details how to change the rego number in XP. I have a legit copt of XP Home and a naughty one of XP Pro. If I was to change the Pro rego number to that of the legit Home version, would I be able to update to Service Pack 2? I cannot update with an illegit copy of XP Pro.
In other words, is this a way of out smarting M$? ;)

There are key gens you can get for it, I am not at liberty to dispense that kind of info on public forum, but once you get a registration number you can change it via that article's instruction.

My understanding is that M$ is/was not going to deny SP2 to pirated copies of XP, due to the gravity of unpatched OS's being in the wild.

Problem is, the Windows Update checks to see if the serial has been reported and if it has, refuses to download the update.

If you want a legit copy of SP2, order the CD on line for free. Takes about a week to get it.

Yes, I had heard that SP2 was able to be installed on pirated copies of XP also. But no dice, I tried and it didn't work. I ordered a copy from MS which I tried as well as copies on the cover of a few mags I read.

I'm not clear on this and don't know how to tell, but in the process of firstly trying to download SP2 I think I installed SP1. Previously when I tried to install SP1 I got the usual error message of the wrong rego number, but not on the last attempt. So how do I determine if SP1 did actually install? If it has then USB2 will work as it doesn't do so without SP1.

Ethics, fair comment you made re not discussing pirating techniques on public forums. :)
