DPNow has a first look at Canon’s recently announced professional-series 16.7 megapixel Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II (the name is a wee bit long, but what can you do?), which is an upgrade of the EOS-1Ds, just with double the resolution, 802.11b/g support via an add-on, and new image processing software. If you just have to own the latest, highest resolution digital camera, and have ten large to drop on a digital camera, this would be it. Then again, DPNow does point out that Nikon’s 12 megapixel D2X is cheaper, faster, and lighter, so comparisons are bound to happen when both cameras are officially released.

Gotta love the rivalry.

I've actually been scoping out the Nikon for a couple of days now. Haven't pulled the trigger to make a purchase yet, but it does look more than capable for what I want. I'm talking about the D2X kit, by the way...

Again, the only reason to get a Nikon DSLR over a Canon is if you already have Nikon Lenses.

If NOT, there is no comparison, especially when you get up to the top of the line full frame sensors. Canon completely owns the Nikon sensors. It just MUCH better. Its not much of a rivalry really. Nikon got the start, Canon killed them with better digital film, and Nikon wont catch back up until they rework their sensor from the ground up.

That 1D2 Mk2 is gorgeous. Maybe in a few years!

Man... what I would do with a 16 megapixel camera... It's just too heavy for me, though - even the smaller Canon Digital Rebel is too large. Hell, even my g3 is too large - weighs too much for my shoulders and back. But what a beautiful camera.

I posted a link in the other thread to the Fuji 12 meg (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0409/04092202fujifilms3pro.asp) which will be out in 1-2 months. It's supposedly in the $3,000 range, and their sensor is miles better than Nikon's. It's built on a modified Nikon F80/N80 body and accepts all their lenses.

Side-by-side comparison of all three. (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos1dmkii%2Cfuji_s3%2Cnikon_d2x&show=all)

I am not a fan of Fuji though. I can't trust them as a camera maker over Nikon or Canon.

Dude, I just spent more than that on airfares! At least this thing I would get to KEEP!

(Of course, I'm also unmarried and can spend money like a crack whore with no one to bitch at me, unlike yourself.)

One might hope this was the first thing out of your mouth when your wife wanted a minivan.

Does anyone have any experience with <a href="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=30-120-159&depa=0">this camera</a>? I've been eyeing it up for a few weeks. I've been wanting a camera for a long time, but only recently have I been serious about it. Good? Bad? I know it's not 16 MP, but I am not planning on printing out billboard-sized photos.

I have its forerunner from 2001, the S30. Not bad, though only 3.3 megapixels, which was cool at the time.

Actually, I do. In another life I ran a photo supply store and I'm pretty familiar with all the manufacturers (admittedly is was over 20 years ago). But on this camera the important thing is that Nikon makes the body and supplies the lenses. Fuji is only supplying their vastly superior CCD sensor and the firmware/electronics.

But hey, if you can't get past the name :) , I won't convince you. If you're open to exploration, try this Nikon forum (http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID75&conf=DCConfID3) for info on these cameras.

:holyshit:

That makes my 5MP canon look like it is suffering from George Costanza shrinkage after polar-bear skinny dipping!

I cant suggest getting a CF Card bigger than a gig. Way too expensive, and its actually very good thinking to get the 640MB CF cards because you fill it up, and burn it ALL to a SINGLE CDROM, something that really takes getting used to.

Digital photography means all sorts of new habits.

Well, the deal I've mentioned gives the 2 GIG card free.

Free is good.

Big cards are nice to have, but seriously, on my 512 card, a Sandisk Extreme, I shoot about 142 exposures at JPEG LARGE FINE which is the biggest setting under RAW. Thats ALOT of shots for a single session. Sure, I regularly use it up in a shoot, but Im doing what can really only be done with digital photography (unless you are mondo-wealthy) and shooting 3 bursts on almost EVERY shot - because I always end up with ONE of the 3 being better than the others.

Card write speed is everything. When you are really rocking, and shooting bursts - waiting for the card to catch up just sucks.
