Vladimir Putin has dismissed the entire Russian government (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3517331.stm). The main point of this was to remove Yeltsin appointed prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov. Mr. Kasyanov was connected with the oligarchs of the Yeltsin years. Indeed, Putin's grip on the country has been tightening. He's recently imprisoned the Russia's richest man and owner of opposition news outlets. This act was considered harmful to market reforms in Russia (http://www.economist.com/agenda/displaystory.cfm?story_id=S%27%298%28%2BPQ%5B%20%23P%22X%0A&CFID=23933604&CFTOKEN=3fe91d3-3ad7a601-e070-42e3-901b-b2595101413e) as Mr. Khodorkovsky was a proponent of more liberal laws than the more centrist Putin. It appears that the consolidation (http://www.gateway2russia.com/st/art_212493.php) of power is a distinct trend (http://english.pravda.ru/society/2001/06/13/7561.html) in Putin's policies.

Heard about this from a Russian friend here last night -- a woman who still owns an apartment in St. P. and who had planned on returning "home" some day. No longer -- she has concluded that it is all over.

They were discussing this last night on one of the cable news channels. Consensus was he did this because he could, i.e. to prove he was in control. They were also saying the time of the oligarchy is over.

The tsar is back!
As far as I am concerned, the Tsar never left.

He left just for a little while. BSN never quite consolidated power as much as the current thug, and for a briefr spell the Duma actually had a bit of influence. But as my friend says, it's all over..
