Unlike the other thread in Bits and Bytes, which focused on a specific sotware, this one focuses on the entire issue of copying. a California court has ruled that DVD copying is illegal even if it's for your own personal use (http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994710).
Fair? Stupid?

Stupid? Yes. Fair? No.
The DMCA has led to all sorts of moronic situations like these. And when people like John Kerry are blatently ignorant about the issues with technology as a whole, then all we will see is more of these rulings.

So if my copy of finding nemo gets scratched, then I have to go out and pay for another when I could simply back it up and toss the one that's not useable? No I don't see this as fair. If I'm not selling it, or using more then one copy at any one time, I think I should be able to back it up just in case. This is gonna be bigger then the music thing now. It's hollywood related. Big money in dvd movies. Unlike radio airings of music that can be recorded on tape, movies only need to be seen once, for the numbers to go way down. Get ready for the battles and lawsuits. :nut:

Fair use, is fair use. I think you will see a case against MPAA and RIAA based on fair use.
This is the same crap they fought and lost against in VCR's.
I pretty much back up all my CD's to play the burnt copy in the car. So if it get's rough handeling, it's cheaper to replace a $1 burnt disc than a $19 CD.
I'm all for companies protecting their rights, but not at the expense of fair use.
