View Full Version : Arizona is proposing a good start on immigration reform

I've long argued that the most effective way to stop illegal immigration is to not go after the immigrant, setting up a profiling law where poliice harrass hispanics in a belated and losing cause to find the illegals, but to go after business for hiring these fugitives. If we try and stop them at the border, and failing that say since you're here already, now you can stay, which is usual policy nowadays, we'll also fail.
Seems Arizona is finally getting serious and proposing serious penalties (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4332617/) for hiring illegals. Unfortunately, business lobbyists have begun spending heavily to buy votes to protect their cheap labor poll. Anyone who thinks this is not happeing, is extremely naive. I don't know if this proposal will get passed, but I think it's worth a try, don't you?

I could care less about Pepe. Now Rosario can make my bed anytime, if you know what I'm sayin'...

Someone who shall remain nameless (OK, it was Leon) just PMed me and said he had no idea what you mean, and asked if there was a way I could get you to post in more detail. However, since subtlety and guile are not in my usual repertoire, I guess this will have to do.

How do you know I don't?
Back on topic. I agree with what Arizona is doing and they are going after something tangible and something that can be not just controlled but penalized. With punitive charges and actions, it's probably the only time you will get results.

I'm all for it, too. Like Coot said, start tossing some white Republican men in the pokey (?) and illegal immigration will be less of a problem.
It also might help return the Mexican side of the Moore Tragedy to their native lands, something that would make my dear, soft-spoken mother happy.

Well, it looks like someone at the LA Times is about to be fired. Here's a piece (http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/opinion/la-op-sum22feb22,1,536062.story) that's pretty well balanced, and it outs a couple of traitors to academia ;)
If you scrutinize the U.S. labor market numbers from the last two years of economic recovery, you're left with what seems to be a paradox. Since the recession's low point, in November 2001, the number of employed people 16 and older has risen, but the number of jobs on the formal payrolls of employers remains below recessionary levels.
The different numbers have conveniently provided politicians with a choice, depending on which points they wanted to make, but they've perplexed economists.
Some analysts have concluded that this gap must represent the different ways in which statistics are kept by the two main sources of national data on employment developments.
But here's a more likely explanation. The number of people on formal payrolls remains low because new jobs tend to be ones that don't show up on payrolls. Employment gains are among the self-employed and contract workers, or in the informal "gray" and "black" labor markets. People are doing temporary day work or contracting that's kept off the books. These don't tend to be highly paid jobs or jobs with benefits like health insurance, and they are often performed by immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants.

Wow. After reading that, I once again have to wonder just what the hell Bush is thinking. Then I remember Fox is renowned to be a consummate fellatist.
