An interesting and wide-ranging article by Christopher Caldwell in the FT, looking at European attitudes towards the US. Seems like America has a rather shaky idea of who its friends are:

We live in interesting times. It brings to mind a Trumanism that's been quoted here before re political life: "If you want a friend, get a dog."

Oh, harsh words from Allene. But I do agree. Don’t trust them any farther than you can overthrow them. We will not be the world’s sweethearts for many years. GW saw to that.

Though hopefully not a poodle, which is what all Blair's critics accuse him of being.

Now David, we've already got that poodle.

Mr Bush certainly has, yessir.

While driving in Islington the other day, I saw a large graffito done in red paint - it reads: "THE POODLE MUST DIE"

:)

That's a little harsh, don't you think? Maybe he could just be exiled to some awful place -- Belfast, maybe. :)

LOL! Maybe we should rename this thread "Gone to the Dogs"!

We did, when we let Bush steal the election. :)

Bob, I was just sitting here waiting for you to pop up with that very message! :haha:

No, no -- the people of Islington are not known for half measures!

This thing was daubed over a large wall above the road, in letters about ten feet high.

Well, you're not disappointing me - but in fact, I read that Mr Blair takes the threat of assassination quite seriously. After all, his predecessor Margaret T. very nearly came to a sticky end in Brighton one year, if you recall.

As well they should be. We've lost several presidents to such nuts. I assume your equivalent of our Secret Service is trying to find out who posted the thing, and how serious they are.

George Washington ruined us with the rest of the world?

Yeah, the Germans have never forgiven him for crossing the Delaware and opening a can of whoop ass on those Hessians. :)

I hope so.
