An interview with Masha Gessen, in the most recent issue of RFE/RL's "Media Matters". She suggests that not only are the Russian media almost completely strangled by the state authorities - which she labels fascist - but also that Western media, particularly in the US, are reluctant to publish material that's overtly critical of the Putin regime.

I think she is right. I have seen very little in the US press about Putin's take-over of independent TV outlets over the last couple of years, or of how rigged the last elections seem to have been. Get some info from Moscow Times and RFE -- not much here, though..

Another interesting article filled with foreboding and with more comments on fascism. She answered a question I was about to ask re the state of the intelligentsia. She's right about the lack of objective coverage of Putin in our press.
