Zakayev's main assertion - that Russia is steadily moving towards a form of fascism - has been echoed by a number of commentators, both in East and West, recently.

While I note the source, I can't say I disagree, although I wouldn't classify it fascism, yet.

If this is true, why are Russians so willing to give up what little freedom they've gained in recent years? Is order more important than freedom? Can't they vote for someone else instead of Putin, or would the election get "fixed" if they were to do that?

I don't think the Russians agree that they had freedom, ever. Anytime they move towards anything remotely democracy, their cynicism kills any incentive to move even further.
