In the '70s and '80s, the Soviets managed to send landers to the cloud-shrouded surface of Venus and take some pictures before the landers were destroyed. Don Mitchell took the original data (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3387895.stm) from the landers and produced higher quality images (http://www.mentallandscape.com/Venus_Venera.htm) of the surface.

Enjoy!

Fascinating pictures. It's amazing that they were able to do much of anything after they landed. The surface temperature of Venus is 860 degrees or so. Zinc melts at 830 degrees and flows freely at 850. :(

And the technology they had was much much worse than what we have today. And yet we lost some of our rovers.
