Russia and Lithuania have signed an agreement on the return of illegal immigrants that enter either country.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Razov and Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Secretary Darius Jurgelevicius signed the readmission treaty in Vilnius Monday. The accord outlines procedures for the reciprocal deportation of illegal immigrants from both countries. Russia had pledged to sign the accord during last year's negotiations with the European Union on transit across Lithuania to and from its Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad
Last month, Russia's presidential envoy on Kaliningrad, Dmitry Rogozin, said the problem of transit across Lithuania to that Baltic enclave has been resolved.
Mr. Rogozin told reporters that Russians traveling to or from Kaliningrad will need special transit authorization starting July first of this year. He said transit to the region will be conducted on a visa-free basis and will respect Lithuania's sovereign rights.
Kaliningrad is a Russian enclave surrounded by Lithuania and Poland on the Baltic Sea. Both countries are set to join the European Union in 2004 and in the process will impose new travel rules for Russian citizens.
