This came up on CNN from US News and World Report Editor, Mort Zukerman.

When De Gaulle told the American forces to leave France, he was asked if that included those soldiers buried in Normandy.

Not sure what the point is Stanley? That the question of France's friendship was questioned before?

Leon,

That comment was just a way of reminding De Gaulle - and the rest of France today - of how much the French need American troops.

The French had a unit participate in the Gulf War, I think a division. Their tank at the time, the AMX-30 was not considered strong enough for prime time so they were given the job of securing the left flank of the American Corps that went after the Republican Guard divisions. They have since replaced the AMX-30 with the Le Clerc, a thoroughly modern tank although it has not been tested in battale. They also had air force participation in the Gulf War.
