BAGRAM: Two US special forces soldiers were killed on Saturday and another wounded in an ambush in southern Afghanistan, the US military said.
A statement from the headquarters of the US forces in Afghanistan said the soldiers were on a reconnaissance patrol in Helmand province when they were attacked. An intelligence chief in southern Afghanistan said three Afghan soldiers also were wounded in the incident. Dad Mohammed Khan, the intelligence chief of Helmand, said the soldiers had been inspecting the construction of a school and a hospital which the Americans were funding. Khan said four people riding on two motorcycles ambushed the US vehicles and escaped. However, other reports suggested that nine people including two US troops were feared dead in two ambush attacks by Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters in Paktika and Paktia areas.
Air strikes: US B-52 bombers and helicopters pounded areas in southern Afghanistan on Saturday where fugitives of the ousted Taliban regime were believed to be hiding, an Afghan official said.
Hundreds of Afghan and US forces have rushed to Sangisak, about 70km north of Kandahar, to flush out the Taliban, Kandahar police spokesman Safiullah told reporters. “There is heavy fighting and intense bombing there,” he said. US military officials were not immediately available for comment. Safiullah said several opposition fighters were killed or wounded in the fighting, but he did not have further details. Provincial governor Jan Mohammad said four Taliban fighters were killed and six others were arrested during the fighting. —Agencies
