Following is a roundup of Friday sermons 14 March 2003:
SAUDI ARABIA:
Riyadh Kingdom of Saudi Arabia TV1 in Arabic, official television station of
the Saudi Government, carries at 0940 GMT a live sermon from the holy mosque
in Mecca.
Shaykh Sa'ud Bin-Ibrahim Shuraym delivers the sermon, in which he contrasts
today's Muslims with those in early Islam. Muslims, he says, may be more
comfortable, well-dressed and well-fed today, but not so strong-willed.
Their current predicament, he adds, is of their own making.
The imam says God's salvation and victory for Muslims is forthcoming, but
under one condition, which is fear and worship of God. He urges Muslims in
these difficult conditions to face the campaign against Islam with courage,
conviction and pride in their great religion.
The imam continues: "We must not waste time commenting bitterly on this
campaign without taking earnest action to repulse it firmly and resolutely.
The Islamic nation must not submit to a campaign of charges by infidels and
become like a feather blown about by the wind. Otherwise, the nation would
become an easy target, making concessions on its religious affairs,
abandoning its principles, casting doubt on them, and revising its school
curricula."
The imam calls on Muslims to remain alert to two things: First, the "rabid
and reckless" campaign against Islam. Second, the "fifth columnists," men
who are more dangerous than the external enemy, as they seek to weaken the
nation, distort facts, and fight a "war by proxy."
The imam continues with the same theme in the second sermon. He underscores
the importance of Islamic unity under the unification testimony: There is no
God but Allah and Muhammad is His prophet.
The imam concludes with a prayer to God to support Islam and Muslims, humble
infidelity and infidels, destroy the enemies of this religion, and make this
and other Muslim countries safe and secure.
Riyadh Kingdom of Saudi Arabia TV2 in Arabic, official television station of
the Saudi Government, carries at 0940 GMT a live sermon from the holy mosque
in Medina.
Shaykh Husayn Al al-Shaykh delivers the sermon, in which he refers to the
current adversity faced by Muslims represented by the campaign against Islam
and the threat of war on Iraq. He urges Muslims to protect themselves
against adversity and its evil by observing the Islamic rules; first,
avoiding sedition; and second, abiding by the Koran and the Sunna.
The imam calls for "a political, administrative, and economic Islamic system
that conforms to the shari'a." He also urges Muslims to be patient, trust in
God, and not despair.
The imam continues with the same theme in the second sermon. He urges
Muslims to return to God in times of adversity and pray to Him sincerely to
spare them of all the evils and dangers of adversities.
The imam concludes with a prayer to God to support and protect Islam and
Muslims in times of adversity. He prays "O Lord, deal with the enemies of
Muslims. O Lord, show us the wonders of your power on them." He also prays:
"O Lord, whoever wishes us or any Muslim evil, busy him with himself. O
Lord, make his plans backfire on him. O Lord, protect our brothers in
Palestine. O Lord, support them against the rancorous Zionists. O Lord,
protect our brothers in Iraq and everywhere."

JORDAN:
Amman Jordan Television Channel 1 in Arabic, official television station of
the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, carries at 0955 GMT a live sermon from
martyr King Abdallah Mosque in Amman.
Shaykh Jamal Shakir delivers the sermon, which he devotes to urging
worshippers to fear and worship God. He also urges them to do what is good,
avoid what is forbidden, and repent for any sins before death overtakes
them.
The imam continues with the same theme in the second sermon. He calls for
Islamic unity saying Muslim brotherhood is the strongest bond. He says that
the Islamic nation cannot become strong and immune to threats without
holding to the Koran and the Sunna. The present situation, he adds, calls on
us to stand as one man and one rank. He warns Muslims against rumors that
seek to undermine their unity. We must be fully aware of what is taking
place around us and remain alert and cautious, he says.
The imam concludes with a prayer to God to support Islam and Muslims, humble
infidelity and infidels, destroy the enemies of religion, and make this and
other Muslim countries safe, secure, and prosperous. He prays to God to
support the oppressed Muslims in Palestine.
SYRIA:
Damascus Syrian Arab Republic radio in Arabic, official station of the
Syrian Government, carries at 1005 GMT a live sermon from Sa'd Ibn-Mu'adh
mosque in Damascus.
Shaykh Abd-al-Razzaq Al-Mu'nis, assistant minister of awqaf, delivers the
sermon, which he devotes to the example and high morals set by the prophet,
saying Muslims must follow them in their social and official relations and
the conduct of their private affairs. President Bashar al-Asad has called on
the government and people to work as one team, he adds: "I imagine that we
cannot become a powerful nation capable of facing the devils of the earth
except with the power of the group." He recalls how Syria was able to
rebuild Zayzun, which was flooded last year. The imam urges Arab unity in
the face of US threats against Iraq and Israeli massacre of Palestinians in
the occupied territories.
In the second sermon, the imam alludes to the potential US war against Iraq.
He says the plot is serious and the aggression will have a serious effect.
He also alludes to the "free and honorable" people in Europe and the United
States who have demonstrated against the war. "The US buildup," he says, "is
a threat to mankind. They are not just after oil, but also Islam. However,
Muslims are strong with God's support."
The imam concludes with a general prayer for the protection of the nation.
IRAQ:
Baghdad Republic of Iraq Television in Arabic, official television station
of the Iraqi Government, carries at 0930 GMT a live sermon from
Umm-al-Ma'arik mosque in Baghdad.
Shaykh Abd-al-Razzaq al-Sa'di delivers the sermon, which he devotes to
current developments. "This crisis," he says, "bodes well and carries the
signs of victory, God willing. This dispute in the Security Council between
all members and the US Administration is a sign of victory. The aircraft
falling here and there with their passengers getting killed is a sign of
victory. These are good signs for the faithful and bad signs for the
unjust." The imam says: "We, from this place, offer some sincere advice to
the Americans to rise against oppressor Bush, and to the British to rise
against oppressor Blair."
The imam mobilizes the Iraqi masses by calling on them to make sacrifices
and not just sit at home. "We must resist the enemies if they invade our
country," he affirms. He also mobilizes the Muslim masses by saying: "It is
the duty of Muslims, Iraqis, and others today to threaten US interests
wherever they may be. They must set them on fire and sink their ships with
all the power they have. This is jihad for the sake of God."
The imam devotes the second sermon to a general prayer. He calls on Iraqis
to pray for salvation and to fast this Monday for the sake of victory over
the enemies. He announces that a special mass will be held outside the
mosque after this Friday prayer for God's help against the aggression and
injustice.
QATAR:
Doha Qatar Television Service in Arabic, official television station of the
State of Qatar, carries at 0850 GMT a live sermon from Umar Bin-al-Khattab
mosque in Doha.
Shaykh Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, Egyptian cleric based in Doha, delivers the
sermon, which he begins by saying that after last Friday's sermon some
people told him that they were afraid the Americans might attempt to harm
him. He says that he is aware of the US Congress Act that gives the
Administration the right to pursue anyone it considers an enemy or a threat.
"US intelligence agencies," he says, "would pursue anyone, kidnap him,
arrest him, or assassinate him, since they do not heed the laws, morals, or
any considerations." The United States has become the most belligerent
country in the world today yet it claims to defend human rights, freedom,
and sanctities, he adds.
Al-Qaradawi affirms that he does not fear the United States for three
reasons: First, it is not God. Second, Muslims believe in fate. And, third,
the most that the United States and its Mosad ally can do, "and they have
made such a threat against me in the past," is to assassinate me. "This
assassination," he says "does not disturb or scare me, or move a single hair
on my body. If it happened, it would achieve a wish I had often asked from
God in my prayer and meditation; namely, to end my life with martyrdom for
His sake and pleasure." My life, he says, is not more precious than the
Palestinians who fall daily with Israeli bullets.
Al-Qaradawi recalls the martyrdom of Palestinian leaders Yahya Ayyash, Fathi
al-Shiqaqi, Abu-Ali Mustafa, Salah Shihadih and also Egyptian Muslim
Brotherhood leaders Hasan al-Banna and Sayyid Qutb and says columns of
martyrs will continue and must continue. He also recalls a speech by Shaykh
Hasan al-Banna some 60 years ago in which the Muslim Brotherhood leader
prayed for a good life and a "good death." Explaining, Al-Qaradawi says
"good death" is when the head is chopped off the body for the sake of God.
Breaking down emotionally, he says: "God gave Shaykh Al-Banna what he wished
and fulfilled his prayer. And I pray to God to make me martyr so I can
follow in the footsteps of my learned mentor, a martyr for the sake of God.
I do not fear death, brothers. There is nothing much left of my life."
Continuing, Al-Qaradawi says even if the Americans wanted to seize his
funds, his savings have already gone after they seized Al-Taqwa Bank under
the false charge of being a terrorist institution owned by terrorists who
supported HAMAS? He says he came from a poor background and he is ready to
live a meager life for the sake of God.
Al-Qaradawi says the Americans have busied the whole world with the question
of Iraq, attack on Iraq, and aggression on Iraq, and before that with the
al-Qa'ida organization and its leaders Bin Ladin and Al-Zawahiri. They
invent a new issue every day, he says, to turn world attention away from the
real tragedy in Palestine, where horrendous crimes are taking place. Every
time an Al-Sumud Missile is destroyed, he says, I feel one of my ribs
broken, and every time a Palestinian is shot dead I feel the bullet inside
my body.
Turning to the Iraqi issue again, Al-Qaradawi says that what is taking place
in Iraq is in the service of Zionism and Israel and that Israel is the main
beneficiary. He says: "We must continue to boycott Israeli and US goods.
And, if the British joined the war, we must also include British goods." He
adds: "Now, at least we must boycott Israeli and US goods: food, drink,
clothes, cars, and others. We must not use them. Don't belittle such a
boycott. Major stores have incurred losses this year, including McDonald's."
Al-Qaradawi devotes the second sermon to a general prayer for mercy and
salvation. He prays: "O Lord, support our brothers in Palestine, Iraq,
Kashmir, and our brother mujahidin everywhere." He also prays "O Lord, deal
with the oppressors, the tyrannical Zionists, the arrogant Americans, and
their British lackeys. O Lord, deal with all those who support them."
